Who We Are

Alaskan Shellfish

The Alaskan Shellfish Growers Association (ASGA) is a private nonprofit organization representing shellfish farmers and those interested in developing shellfish aquaculture in Alaska.  ASGA was formed in the early 1980's when Alaska residents experimenting with suspended oyster culture ran into a confusing wall of government permits.  The organization has evolved into a strong voice for Alaska shellfish farmers and its programs have matured beyond representation before government agencies.

ASGA has taken a strong role in marketing, research and development, and diversification into new species.  Our generic marketing program for Alaska Oysters won national recognition, and we also have educated consumers and buyers about Alaska Steamer Clams.

We also have developed a comprehensive set of guidelines for shellfish farmers to minimize impacts of their operations on the environment and other users of marine waters.  The Environmental Codes of Practice recognize the dependence of shellfish farms on clean water and a healthy marine environment.
